Guided Growth: Airway Development
Helping your child’s face — and airway — grow the way it should
This is the heart of the Aloha philosophy in practice. A child’s head and face grow around how they breathe, suck, and swallow — when those functions aren’t working well, the airway itself can develop smaller and more restricted, setting the stage for a lifetime of breathing challenges. Our Guided Growth airway development evaluations look closely at facial growth patterns, muscular function, cranial nerve health, and risk factors for sleep disordered breathing, pairing these findings with questionnaires and sleep study results to build a complete picture of a child’s airway health. From there, we create an individualized plan — which may include oral orthopedic appliances, myofunctional therapy, nasal breathing retraining, and nutritional guidance — aimed at guiding healthy facial growth while there’s still time to shape it, and reducing a child’s long-term risk for sleep apnea.
Why It Matters
- A child’s head grows around nasal breathing, sucking, and swallowing patterns from early development.
- When a child can’t effectively breathe, suck, or swallow; the lack of muscle strength and function prevents full growth of the mouth and nose.
- This begins a cascade: mouth breathing, improper tongue posture, and overuse of facial muscles — which in turn changes facial development and leads to a smaller upper airway.
- Catching and guiding this early changes the entire trajectory of a child’s breathing, sleep, and facial development.
